How to Verify Your Blogger Blog in Webmaster Tools

Many people seem to have trouble verifying and enabling their Blogger blog with Google's Webmaster Tools. Even the instructions that Google provides are not entirely correct. Follow our easy instructions below to verify and enable your Blogger blog in Webmaster Tools.
  1. Sign into Google, click My Account, and click Blogger.
  2. At the bottom of the Blogger Dashboard, under Tools and Resources, click Webmaster Tools. You should be redirected to your Webmaster Tools homepage. If you receive a message at the top of the window stating "There was an error sending your blog information to Webmaster Tools; click here to retry," click as instructed and after waiting a bit you will be taken to the Webmaster Tools homepage.
  3. If you have not added your blog yet, click Add a site. In the URL box that opens, type your blog name like this: blog-help-guide.blogspot.com - substituting your blog domain for ours - and click Continue.
  4. On the Webmaster Tools homepage, your site will be listed. Under "Verification," click Verify this site. Then copy the Meta tag code that is displayed in the box as directed. Leave the browser window open.
  5. Open a new browser window and go to your blog Layout tab. One way to get there is to go to google.com, click My Account, click Blogger, and click Layout for the blog you are verifying.
  6. From the Layout screen, click Edit HTML. Before proceeding, click Download Full Template and save a fresh copy of your template to disk.
  7. The Meta Tag code you copied must be inserted directly below the <head> tag. For most XML templates, the <head> tag should be visible 7 or 8 lines down from the top of the HTML page. If you cannot see it, click Ctrl + F to open the "Find" window, type <head>, and click Next until you find it.
  8. Open up a few blank lines directly beneath the <head> tag and paste the Meta tag code you copied from Webmaster Tools.
  9. Click Save Template. If you receive an error, make sure your Meta tag code has a slash before the ending >. Your code should end with />
  10. If you still get an error message "Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed," review these instructions again.
  11. When your change has been successfully saved, return to the Webmaster Tools browser window and click Verify at the bottom of the window.
After a moment, Google will take you to the Webmaster Tools Dashboard and below the word "Dashboard" it should say "Googlebot has successfully accessed your home page." The next line below will indicate if your site has been indexed or not. If your site has not been indexed, perform the two steps below:
  • Go to the Settings tab on your blog Dashboard and under Basic, make sure you have answered YES to the questions "Add your blog to our listings?" and "Let search engines find your blog?".
  • Then tell Google about your blog by visiting blogsearch.google.com/ping, typing in your blog address, and pressing Submit Blog.
Cheers!
